Britain has marked the second anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the London transit system days after a wave of terrorist attempts.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown and other British officials laid wreaths Saturday at the scene of one of the 2005 bombings, the Kings Cross underground station, in a low-key ceremony. Explosions in three underground trains and a bus during the rush hour on July 7, 2005, killed 52 people and injured more than 700 others.

Also in London, the first person charged in connection with three failed car bombings in London and Glasgow appeared in court. Iraqi doctor Bilal Abdullah, who is one of two men who drove a flaming vehicle into the terminal at Glasgow Airport, is charged with conspiring to cause explosions.

The 27-year old Iraqi is one of eight Muslim medical professionals arrested after the attacks last week.

London was also hosting one portion of the international "Live Earth" concert aimed at raising awareness of global warning.

Victims' families and survivors at Saturday's commemorative ceremony requested a smaller event to ease security concerns.

Britain is on a "severe" level terrorism alert, down from the highest "critical" level.
