Air National GuardThroughout history, the Air National Guard has been responsible for the defense of the United States. General George Washington commanded the first National Guard unit against the invasion of British forces. National Guard troops participated in the War Between the States. Whether guarding its borders to the north and south or patrolling the waters of our coastline, the Air Guard ensures the safety of all Americans. Today, the Air National Guard provides 100 percent of the Air Force's continental United States based air defense interceptor force.Find out how you can play a critical role in the defense of our country.
Prior Service Benefits If you are retired Active Duty Air Force, you may join the Air National Guard provided you are not retired from active duty Air Force service for more than 5 years, must be fully qualified in the AFSC/MOS position to be filled and you can complete at least 3 years of service before your 60th birthday. Educational Benefits Federal education benefits are available to all unit members provided they enlist for 6 years. These benefits are available to our members after completion of basic training (boot camp) and technical school. If you have prior military service, you must complete any technical school requirements and have used all active duty Montgomery GI bill benefits you are entitled to prior to receiving Air National Guard educational benefits. This program is a non-contributory benefit, meaning no payment or reduction in pay is required from you to receive these benefits. Federal benefits received: Montgomery GI Bill (up to $276 per month toward college tuition. Amount determined by college course load carried per semester.) $20,000 student loan repayment program Montgomery GI Bill kicker (up to $350 per month. Amount determined by college course load carried per semester. Not available in all career fields.) The Community College of the Air Force You can earn a 2 year Associate Degree in your occupation through the Community College of the Air Force (CCAF). Also you will earn college credits for both Basic Training and Technical school, which can be applied toward your CCAF degree or the college that you are attending. Retirement Pay There is a $5,000 enlistment bonus depending upon the job. Your local recruiter can let you know what career fields/jobs are offered a bonus at their unit. Life Insurance Under the current Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance plan, each Reservist can purchase up to $250,000 of full time coverage for only $20.00 per month. Reservists can choose lesser amounts of coverage for lower premiums or decline coverage altogether. If life insurance is purchased, dependent children are provided $10,000 in coverage free of charge and up to $100,000 in coverage for the Reservist's spouse is also available at additional cost. Other Reserve Benefits The Air National Guard offers many federal benefits/entitlements to their unit members and their families such as: Base Exchange (military department store), Commissary (military grocery store), use of Morale Welfare And Recreation (MWR) facilities, and $250,000 life insurance at reduced rates. Enlist for a minimum of 4 years to receive these benefits. In addition to the federal benefits listed above, each state may offer additional benefits for their members such as: 100% tuition assistance, state tax deferment, and reduced auto license fees to name a few.
