Marine Corps ReserveThe United States Marines have defended and fought for the American people since before the Continental Congress approved the Declaration of Independence. Congress authorized two battalions of Marines on November 10, 1775 - the official birth of the Marine Corps.Find out how you can play a critical role in the defense of our country.
"First to Fight" is a long-standing Marine axiom that refers to the traditional Marine role of being among the first to see action when a defense call is initiated. For emergencies at home or abroad, Marines have the capability to mobilize immediately because of their constant state of battle-readiness- their "expeditionary" nature. The primary changes in the Corps of today as compared to yesterday are the resources and technology the Corps now has at its disposal. From computer-designed uniforms to unmanned aerial vehicles, today's Marine Corps is capable of meeting and overcoming any challenge it faces. Educational Benefits Reservists interested in a college or trade school education may qualify for financial assistance through the Montgomery GI Bill. Montgomery GI Bill - Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR) The Montgomery GI Bill - Selected Reserve provides education benefits for Marine reserves who: have completed or are completing a 6 year obligation in the Selected Reserves, or, if an officer, have agreed to serve 6 years in addition to their original obligation; have completed IADT; have a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; and remain in good standing with a Selected Reserve unit. Educational assistance for undergraduate, graduate, or technical training is available under the program. Under most circumstances, benefits end 10 years after the date the Marine became eligible for the program or on the day the Marine leaves the Selected Reserve. Montgomery GI Bill Selected Reserve Enhanced Educational Benefits (MGIB-SR Kicker) The Kicker offers eligible Marines as much as $350 in additional educational benefits monthly. As with the MGIB-SR basic benefits the Kicker is prorated for less than full time study. The Kicker is available for a maximum of 36 months of full time academic pursuit and are retainable as long as basic benefits are available. Marine Corps Institute Distant Learning PME courses offer Marines an excellent opportunity to develop their professional knowledge, leadership and skills while at home.
