Educational Benefits
The Naval Reserve offers benefits that help you pursue your education now and in the future.

Selected Army Reserve Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB-SR)
The MGIB-SR provides up to 36 months of educational assistance for Reservists who incur a six-year obligation and maintain satisfactory drill participation. Rates are paid according to status (full-time, half-time, etc,) and program (college, apprenticeship, vo-tech, etc.) The maximum amount is currently about $250 per month, and increases with cost-of-living raises each year. Benefits cover both undergraduate and post-graduate studies for officer and enlisted members.

Compensation
Drilling Reservist receives four days of base pay for two days of weekend training. You'll also receive full pay and allowances for meals and housing during the two weeks of Annual Training (AT) a year. Naval Reservists' pay and allowances are determined by the same pay scale used by active duty Navy personnel. Reservists receive all general military increases in pay. Pay is based on rate and time in service.

Selected Reservists on active duty receive the same rate of compensation as other active duty personnel of equivalent rank, time in service and qualifications.

Benefits
As a Reservist, you'll receive full pay and allowances for meals and housing during your Annual Training each year. And then there are the benefits that aren't reflected in your pay, including:
  • A retirement program.
  • Reserve Montgomery GI Bill (educational assistance).
  • Department of Veterans Affairs Home-Loan Guarantee program (available to Reservists with at least six years of honorable service).
  • Military department store (exchange) and grocery store (commissary) privileges.
  • Low-cost life insurance options (up to $250,000).
  • Travel opportunities.
  • Management and leadership training.
  • Health care for injury or illness sustained during active duty and training periods.
  • Promotions based on ability and performance.
  • Space-available flights anywhere in the United States on military aircraft.

Enlisted Advancement and Promotions
Advancement for Sailors in the Naval Reserve follows the same procedure as promotion for active duty Sailors. Enlisted Reservists perform training, attend schools, and take exams in order to advance in rank. The Navy Advancement Center provides advancement in rate products and information. Advancement depends on the needs of the Navy, the Reservist's ability and time-in-grade, plus a passing mark on the advancement test (Training courses are available to help Reservists get ahead faster). Reservists may also request a direct conversion to another rating without an examination, if they're qualified for that rating.

Officer Advancement and Promotions
Promotion for members of the Naval Reserve follows the same procedure as promotion for active duty officers. To be eligible for promotion consideration, Naval Reserve officers must be in an active status (Ready Reserve or Standby Reserve USNR-SI). Officers transferred from the inactive list to an active status will not be eligible for consideration for one year from the date of removal from the inactive list, even though they may be otherwise eligible for consideration by a selection board. Officers recommended for promotion will have been considered professionally and morally qualified by the selection board. Commands holding the service records of selectees are required to ensure the physical qualification of the officers recommended for promotion. In some cases, officers are selected for promotion while on extended active duty and are released from active duty prior to being promoted. They will not require physical qualification certification.

Retirement Pay
After 20 years of qualified service you can become eligible for retirement when you turn 60. Of course, how much retirement you receive depends on your total reserve time as well as your pay grade.
